  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

The Yeruham Torah community experienced a unique event when scholarships were granted by the organization “Mechudadim B’Ficha” for the student of the Yeshivat Bein Hazmanim; the ceremony was held this year at the home of Maran Rabbi Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz shlita.

"Mechudadim B’Ficha" is a special program being carried out as part of the diverse activities of Yeruham’s Yeshivat Bein Hazmanim. In this program yeshiva students who live in Yeruham present "chaburot," chiddushim from any subject in Shas, and are granted scholarships as determined by the heads of the yeshiva who check the chiddushim. Besides this, the yeshiva students are also tested during the Bein Hazmanim on the tractates they learned in their yeshivot during the previous zman, and the scholarship awards are determined based on the test scores.

The program gains momentum every year; the Yeshivat Bein Hazmanim directors are amazed at the excellent "chaburot," their high level and stylistic quality, as well as great success scored on tests of even very difficult tractates. Chazal said, "One who wishes to grow wise should turn towards the south," and this statement receives an appropriate and tangible expression in the form of the Torah community of Yeruham.

The ceremony of awarding these scholarships takes place each year at Chanukah, and this year it was decided that the event will be held at the home of Hagaon Rabbi Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz shlita, in order to increase the reverence for Torah and its scholars in the eyes of the yeshiva students and supporters of the Torah.

With the publicizing of the event throughout the community of Yeruham there was much excitement. Not every day do people of the South have a chance to visit the home of Gedolei Hador shlita. Although it was impossible to respond to all the appeals of the interested community members who wanted a place on the bus, there were private vehicles as well with place for everyone.

On Motzaei Shabbos, the yeshiva students who won a scholarship from “Mechudadim B’Ficha” and their parents, along with other community members, gathered together, and the crowd squeezed into the living room in the home of Maran Rabbi Lefkowitz shlita. The heads of the Yeshivat Bein Hazmanim of Yeruham brought the hard working yeshiva students and introduced them to the Gaon shlita; they study in Tifrach, Beit Midrash Elyon, Kol Torah, Meor HaTalmud, and more, and asked to hear words of chizuk in honor of the Torah scholars.

The Gaon shlita received them warmly and opened with the words of Chazal from Masechet Chagiga about someone who reviews his learning a hundred times , who is considered as “one who did not serve Hashem," compared to one who reviewed a hundred and one times. He commented on the vast difference between spirituality and worldliness, since a man can remember what he had learned properly after a few dozen reviews. If he repeated it a hundred times it was only because of the love of Torah throbbing within, nevertheless, one hundred and one times is very different level, to the point where there is no resemblance between him and the one who reviewed one less time. Therefore, there is much greater importance to reviewing a tractate studied previously in the last zman, as the further review adds an immeasurable virtue to the ben Yeshiva.

The Gaon shlita spoke excitedly about the virtue of holy yeshivot where the students are educated, and blessed the yeshiva students and community members that they should grow in Torah and the fear of G-d, to make Torah great and enhance it, and for nachat from all their descendants. He also blessed the heads of the Yeshivat Bein Hazmanim that they should merit to increase more Torah study and continue their worthy activities for Torah and our heritage.

After the moving event the assembled guests had a Seudat Melavah Malka and Mesibat Chanukah, during which Hagaon Rabbi Menachem Lang, Menahel Ruchani of Yeshivat Darchei Moshe, and Hagaon Rabbi Menachem Wolpe shlita, one of the roshei yeshiva of Yeshivat Rabbeinu Chaim Ozer addressed the crowd. At the end the respectable grants were awarded to the students. The event ended with dancing for the joy of the mitzvah and the community returned to Yeruham, their hearts filled with a sublime feeling.
