  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

Aviation Vest for a Swift

A swift nestling, of the type that lives at the Kotel HaMaaravi, was hurt. A special aviation vest was crafted to bring him back to his home between the stones.

An original idea conceived by the veterinary staff may save a nestling Common Swift that was brought to the Safari Park and Nature and Parks Authority Wildlife Veterinary Hospital seven months ago, during the Swifts’ migration.

When the nestling arrived from central Israel, it was small and weak; one of its wings was underdeveloped as well.

The bird has grown well over the past seven months, and recently the staff noticed that it was stronger, but because of its hospitalization it’s been resting on the ground all the time with its wings beating on the floor. Its right wing is not well developed; at the same time it’s not developing its flight muscles sufficiently.

At the end of last week the veterinary staff conceived of an original idea to help the swift heal completely.

A special flight vest was fashioned for the small swift, which weighs just 35 grams, with both wings poking out as well as its two feet. The flight vest is attached to the ceiling, and for half an hour the swift is left alone hanging from the ceiling, where it can exercise its wings and strengthen its muscles.

The staff plans to make a ‘personal training program’ for the baby swift, and every day to extend the time it will stay in the air to make it stronger and reduce its time on the ground.

The swift’s body length is about 16 cm, and its wingspan between 42-48 cm. When the Common Swift arrives in Israel it dwells between the stones of the Kotel, and in recent years a “Reception” was even held for the returning swifts at the Kotel Plaza.
