Yekkeh
Who is a Yekkeh?
The Jews of Eastern Europe, including the Russian, Polish, Romanian, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Czechoslovakian and Lithuanian Jews would refer to the German Jews as 'Jeck' , meaning 'strange' or 'clown' in German, which turned into the word Jekkeh.
During the thirties, (5689-5699), when the Fifth Aliyah consisting mostly of German Jews, reached Israel, they were referred to as 'Jekkes' by the residents of the Holy Land.
Due to the German mentality of these 'Jekkes', who placed a strong emphasis on orderliness, politeness and hygiene, 'Jekke' turned into an honorable title referring to any person who is punctual and neat, regardless of his origin.
