  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

A Long Word

The Hebrew letter 'heh' creates the shortest word and is added to another to create the longest in the Bible.

The longest word in the Bible is comprised of ten letters, and appears in the longest verse in the Scriptures; in the Scroll of Esther, where the miracle of Purim is recorded.

The word is 'ha'achashdarpanim' – 'the achashdarpanim', and appears in chapter 8, verse 9 in the Scroll of Esther. The verse is the longest in the Scriptures and is comprised by forty three words: (loosely translated) "And the books of the King were read at that time, on the third month which is the month of Sivan, on the twenty third day, and all that Mordechai had ordered the Jews and the Achashdarpanim and the Pachot and the ministers of the lands from India to Africa was written – one hundred and twenty seven countries, each country in its language and each people in its tongue and the Jews according to their writing and language."

The word 'Achashdarpanim' appears several times in the Scriptures; however the Hebrew letter of 'heh', which turns a noun or an adjective into a definite article, was added to the word, rendering it the longest in the whole Bible.

As opposed to the longest word in the Bible, the shortest word is a monosyllabic word – the letter 'heh' which can also serve as a question. It appears in Deuteronomy, chapter 32, verse 6: "Will you do this to G-d, you evil and unwise people?" The Rema (Rabbi Meir ben Todros Halevi Aboulafia, 1180-1245) attested to the fact that in the ancient scriptures, the letter 'heh', when standing by itself, was frequently used to turn a sentence into a question. From here one can conclude that the shortest word is the letter of 'heh when it stands alone.

The shortest verse in the Bible appears in Chronicles, and includes nine letters only: 'Adam Shet Enosh' (Chronicles, part1 chapter 1 verse 1) – this interesting verse is comprised by one two-letter word, one three-letter word and one four-letter word. Thus the shortest verse in the bible is shorter than the longest word of the Bible.
