In I got It!
Wear It Out – and After, Renew
The source of this blessing is in the Shulchan Aruch (Orach Chaim, Sec. 223), where the Rema discusses the blessing of ‘Shehecheyanu’ recited upon wearing a new item of clothing. According to the words of the Rema, the blessing we give the wearer is: ‘Wear out’ the new garment, and ‘renew it’ after the current new garment is worn out in good health. There are some opinions that hold, based on these words of the Rema, that one shouldn’t give this blessing to a person wearing new garments made of animal skins, since the actualization of this blessing will necessitate the death of another animal - and it is written: ‘and His mercy is on all His creatures’.
In the original Takanos (rules) set forth by Kupat Rav Meir Ba’al HaNess from Rav Tzvi of Ziditchov, this blessing is brought down in its complete version: ‘At the time a person makes a new garment, he should give charity and in this merit he will wear it out and renew it.’
