  • The Mission Continues

As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!

The Apology of the Pope – Too Little, Too Late

When did the Christian Church first acknowledge Judaism?

N. Lieberman 10/12/2009 10:00

The first time in history that the Christian Church has publicly acknowledged Judaism as a faith was not so long ago, in the year of 2000\5760.

Only after two thousand years of Exile, during which the Christians have constantly embittered our lives – has Pope Yohanan Paulus II, who is the 255th Pope (or the 254th according to another counting method) - finally offered an apology for all the horrendous acts that have been conducted against the Jews in the name of Christianity and 'kindly' agreed to acknowledge Judaism.

With these words, the Pope wished to simply wipe away the painful past, where the Jews have suffered immensely at the hands of the Christians, being massacred or forcibly converted against their will.

Of the many horrifying acts of slaughter and murder which the Christians have carried out against the Jews throughout history, one can find the infamous blood libels, which characterized the Middle Ages, but have also been heard of frequently in this time and age of "modern anti-Semitism".

Additionally, one can find the Crusades, the pogroms of 4456 during the Middle Ages, the Hep-Hep pogroms in Germany during the Renaissance, the forceful conversions and the infamous investigation-institution which was founded during the time of the Inquisition in the 15th century.

Pope Yohanan Paulus II, in addition to his apology, also visited the Holy City of Jerusalem and inserted a personal note between the stones of the Western Wall, in which he had written:

"G-d of our forefathers, You have chosen Abraham and his descendants to spread Your name to all the nations. We are deeply saddened by the behavior of those who, throughout history, have caused anguish to Your children, and for this we ask Your forgiveness. It is our wish to commit ourselves to true peace with our brothers. Jerusalem, 26\03\2000."

Nonetheless, this very Pope has led the effort to proclaim Pope Pius the 12th a saint, although he is considered a collaborator with the Nazis and is known for having done nothing to assist the Jews during the Holocaust, but watched them suffer in silence.

We can only continue praying: "Rescue me please from the hands of my brother."
